Suspiria remake may never happen, according to director David Gordon Green

Back in May, we received some big casting news for David Gordon Green’s proposed remake of SUSPIRIA; a press release was issued, a boatload of producers had their names attached, the stars appeared to be aligned. But things are not full steam ahead on the project; in fact, it may never happen at all. And this is coming from a reliable source: the director himself.

At Sundance to promote his latest, PRINCE AVALANCHE, Green spoke a few dire words to The Playlist about SUSPIRIA, indicating that the movie has become tangled in a legal mess from which it may not be able to escape.

“Suspiria is caught up in legal crap so who knows what will ever happen to that,” he explained. “That kind of falls into the ‘Confederacy Of Dunces’ category of ‘someday I’d like to make these movies’ that I was once attached to and worked on, but they may never happen.”

That doesn’t sound very good. I’m sure plenty of people are celebrating now, rejoicing the potential death of an arguably unnecessary remake.

Based on Dario Argento’s 1977 film of the same name, SUSPIRIA centers on Suzie (Isabelle Fuhrman), a bright and ambitious American student who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school. After a fellow student is brutally murdered and several other cruel and strange homicides disrupt the once quiet life on campus, Suzie realizes that the academy may be a front for a more menacing organization.

If it ever goes forward, the remake will star Isabelle Fuhrman (pictured below), Isabelle Huppert, Janet McTeer, Michael Nyqvist and Antje Traue.
