Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, all of the theatrical releases that had been scheduled for the next several months are gradually being pushed back to later dates. While some of these movies have been optimistically moved to dates later in 2020, Sony has just taken the bigger step of moving nearly every one of their major 2020 releases to 2021.
Of interest to us here at Arrow in the Head are the release date changes for GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE, which serves as a sequel to the first two GHOSTBUSTERS movies, and the Marvel Comics adaptation MORBIUS, which stars Jared Leto as the vampiric titular character.
GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE was originally supposed to be released on July 10, 2020 but is now set to reach theatres on March 5, 2021.
Directed by Jason Reitman (son of GHOSTBUSTERS 1 and 2 director Ivan Reitman) from a screenplay he wrote with Gil Kenan, the film stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Bokeem Woodbine, Celeste O'Connor, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver in the story of a family that
moves back home to a small town. While there, they begin to learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself.
MORBIUS is based on a character created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #101 in 1971. Originally scheduled for release on July 31, 2020, it has now moved to March 19, 2021.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa and scripted by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, the film stars Leto, Jared Harris, Tyrese Gibson, Adria Arjona, and Matt Smith in the story of
Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. Instead of being cured, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength.
I'm looking forward to seeing both of these movies. The extra wait is a bummer, but the delay is understandable.
