For those who might not know, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a series of children's books written back in the 80s through the early 90s by Alvin Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell. There were three books in total and their titles were Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones.
Writer Alvin Schwartz chose the topics of folklore and urban legends for the stories his stories, which he researched so extensively it took him more than a year to write each book. The first book hit back in 1981 and the third and final book in 1991. Since then the books have gained a huge cult following.
The series is notorious for coming under fire of the American Library Association for its violence, and it's surreal, nightmarish illustrations. And at one point CBS Films acquired the rights to the books, wanting to make a movie out of them, and it was even announced that John August would write the film. But that didn't happen.
While we didn't get a film (yet) of the books, there is now an FREE art exhibit happening Friday night, March 10th from 7pm to 12am at San Antonio, Texas’ Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex. The exhibit has an Instagram account and I searched through it to collect some of my personal favorite pieces of art, which you can check out below.
