It's no mistake that GET OUT and THE PURGE are the films referenced in the promotional material for Blumhouse Productions' upcoming film THE HUNT, because this movie is meant to be a "social thriller" just like those projects were. This time the production company behind those social thrillers has teamed up with Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and some of his collaborators from the HBO series The Leftovers to craft a film that has the following synopsis:

Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don't know they've been chosen… for a very specific purpose… The Hunt.

In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, a group of globalist elites gathers for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt humans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of the hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, GLOW), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off, one by one, as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.

Gilpin and Swank are joined in the cast by Ike Barinholtz and Emma Roberts. Don't expect to see them in the teaser trailer embedded below, because the marketing is taking an approach similar to the faux political ads created for the PURGE sequels. The teaser for THE HUNT plays like a commercial inviting people to participate in this private hunting experience.

This story of the rich hunting humans is the umpteenth take on Richard Connell's 1924 novel The Most Dangerous Game, which has served as the basis of some awesome movies over the decades. This one was written by Lindelof and The Leftovers staff writer Nick Cuse, who also happens to be the son of Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse.

THE HUNT was directed by Craig Zobel, whose previous credits include Z FOR ZACHARIAH and three episodes of The Leftovers.

Lindelof produced the film with Jason Blum, while Zobel and Cuse serve as executive producers with Steven R. Molen.

THE HUNT is set to reach theatres on September 27th.
