Yesterday we hit you with the news that Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks would be joining Elle Fanning and Abbey Lee in Nicolas Winding Refn's THE NEON DEMON. Unfortunately at the time we didn't know much about what the film would be about, but now WhatCulture has revealed some possible details regarding what the film will deal with.
While nothing is confirmed at this time, WhatCulture has revealed that the film is about…
…a group of supermodels going to extremes in their attempts to keep looking the way they do. What this translates into is voodoo and cannibalism.
There’s a little Countess Bathory in this concept. To put it bluntly, she’s the crazy lady who had virgins murdered so she could bathe in their blood. She was a monster.
Bathory’s story has been retold and reinvented so many times because its metaphorical value has never stopped being relevant. Translating those core symbols to Los Angeles and a subculture of supermodels is hardly the most obscure notion that Refn and Laws might have come up with, but who cares? Not when there’s potential for both hitting the LA scene with some specific, scathing satire and also delivering some sharp, long-lasting relevance that applies outside of the context.
If this scoop pans out this could be a very interesting film, indeed.
Jena Malone and Bella Heathcote are also starring. THE NEON DEMON is being financed by Gaumont and Wild Bunch; it's currently making the rounds at EFM in Berlin.
