When Swedish filmmaker David F. Sandberg embarked on making a 3 minute no-budget short called LIGHTS OUT with his wife Lotta Losten, the couple couldn't have imagined the level of success it would bring. New Line Cinema and producer James Wan hired Sandberg to direct a feature length expansion on the concept of LIGHTS OUT, then gave him the ANNABELLE 2 directing gig based on how well things went with that collaboration. Now that LIGHTS OUT, which had a budget just under $5 million, has made over $21 million its opening weekend, New Line and Wan are looking to continue their working relationship with Sandberg on a sequel.
Screenwriter Eric Heisserer will be returning to write LIGHTS OUT 2. The story he wrote for the first movie goes like this:
When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out… and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. A frightening entity with a mysterious attachment to their mother, Sophie, has reemerged. But this time, as Rebecca gets closer to unlocking the truth, there is no denying that all their lives are in danger… once the lights go out.
There are no details currently available on what the story of LIGHTS OUT 2 might be or who might be in the cast, but we'll keep you updated on this project as it progresses.
