Netflix’s Death Note 2 still alive & in good hands

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

YOU'RE NEXT and THE GUEST director Adam Wingard's Netflix live-action adaptation of DEATH NOTE hit back in 2017 and since we have been getting updates here and there on the planned sequel DEATH NOTE 2. Last we heard, Gregg Russo, the screenwriter behind the upcoming reboots of RESIDENT EVIL and MORTAL KOMBAT was penning the script, and today, he just gave us an update on its progress.

Russo took to Twitter to let us all know:

Appreciate all the check-ins from Death Note fans. Have something very cool in the works for the franchise- can't talk about it yet but it's def alive and in good hands 😉

There's no word on if Wingard will return as he's currently working on GODZILLA VS KONG but he did say this last year:

At the end of the day, there are a lot of places to explore where to take Light. And ultimately the series is sort of about almost his downfall as a character. This is sort of the beginning of it or the origin of it. There are definitely lots of places to go, and we know generally where we would take it. Hopefully, people will watch it and Netflix will order a sequel. They definitely are ready to.

We kept it open as a sequel. When I went to Netflix initially, I pitched it as at least a two-film series, maybe three, knowing this was the origin story. We definitely designed the film so it plays a closed loop. Sequels are never guaranteed. They have to be earned. On some level, I really love that the movie ends with all the characters damaged. It's such an unconventional ending for a comic book film.

DEATH NOTE was directed by Adam Wingard (YOU'RE NEXT, THE GUEST) from a screenplay written by Charles and Vlas Parlapanides, and Jeremy Slater based on Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Masi Oka, Jason Hoffs, and Ted Sarandos produced the film which starred Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley, Shea Whigham, Paul Nakauchi, Jason Liles, and Willem Dafoe as the voice of Ryuk.

Netflix unleashed the flick back on August 25, 2017. STREAM IT HERE
