Matt Damon vs. monsters. I can't say that's a match-up I ever expected to see, but that's what we're getting in director Zhang Yimou's THE GREAT WALL. As it turns out, when Damon decides to fight monsters he doesn't just take on one or a few of them – the film's latest trailer, which can be seen below, reveals that this movie features a whole hell of a lot of monsters. I'm starting to see why this is the most expensive Chinese movie of all time.
This trailer does seem to bring up an issue, though. The dialogue here is very stilted, it's almost like they're purposely trying to sound old school cheesy, similar to how it would be if the movie was dubbed in English.
The story idea for THE GREAT WALL was conceived by Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull and WORLD WAR Z author Max Brooks. Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro, and Tony Gilroy fleshed the ideas out into a screenplay.
Damon's co-stars include Willem Dafoe, Pedro Pascal, Andy Lau, Luhan, and Jing Tian. His character is
a soldier who is part of a group of mercenaries traveling to China in order to bring back gunpowder to Europe. When the group is attacked by mystical beasts, the man finds himself in a war between a secret warrior clan and the beasts.
THE GREAT WALL is set to hit theatres on February 17, 2017.
