Several films on Universal's slate are doing the release date shuffle, including the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's PACIFIC RIM and Uni's Alex Kurtzman-directed reboot of THE MUMMY.
Universal was originally set to release Legendary's PACIFIC RIM 2 on April 7, 2017, but Legendary took to Twitter to share the new release date:
PACIFIC RIM 2, the follow-up to the epic action-adventure Guillermo del Toro created, will be released on Friday, August 4, 2017 #Summer2017
— Legendary (@Legendary) April 24, 2015
That's just a small 4 month shift which now makes PACIFIC RIM 2 an end-of-the-summer release. Other Universal releases, including THE MUMMY reboot and the UNTITLED UNIVERSAL MONSTER FRANCHISE FILM will see a much longer gap between the originally slated release and the new date.
The Wrap shares that Universal Pictures’ THE MUMMY will move from June 24, 2016, to Friday, March 24, 2017, a shift of 9 months, so we won't be seeing a UNIVERSAL MONSTER FILM in theaters next year after all. Uni's UNTITLED UNIVERSAL MONSTER FRANCHISE FILM release has been delayed by almost a full year, going from April 21, 2017, to Friday, March 30, 2018.
We'll keep you updated on all of these films as we hear more.
