Tomie live-action project may still be alive after all

At one point, the ill-fated mobile-only streaming service Quibi attempted to win users by adapting the popular manga Tomie from acclaimed artist Junji Ito into an Americanized TV series starring Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and directed by Alexandre Aja (Crawl). Of course, after the inevitable cancellation of the service, Tomie seemed dead in the water.

But, according to an interview with Aja on the Boo Crew Podcast – ostensibly about his Netflix sci-fi thriller Oxygen – he made a brief comment that suggests the project might be not be so dead after all, stating: 

I don’t know if you’re familiar with the manga but…you cannot kill Tomie. So… she will be back.

Sounds good to me! Not sure if I feel Aja is the best fit fo the material, but I'm looking forward to a new live-action adaptation nonetheless!

Either way, here's the official synopsis:

Tomie is the story of what happens when a beautiful high school girl goes missing and pieces of her body are discovered scattered around a small town. But what starts out as a murder mystery turns into something even more horrific.

No official release date has been set, but we'll keep you posted. This also isn't the first adaptation of the manga, as there was a live-action Japanese film series based on it (which I now need to check out asap!).
