Earlier this month we reported on the rumor that the upcoming RINGS, to be helmed by F. Javier Gutierrez, was said to be a prequel to THE RING remake that would take place years before the creation of the haunted VHS tape and tell the origin of Samara’s reign of terror. Now Gutierrez has taken to Twitter to clarify the rumors and share when RINGS will take place.
From Gutierrez's Twitter:
Hey peeps, #Rings is NOT a prequel, the story takes place 13 years after #TheRing🙂

So instead of a prequel, we're getting another sequel. While plot details are scarce we do know the film is currently in pre-production in Atlanta and that shooting will begin soon so we can expect to hear some updates soon enough.
As previously reported, THE 5TH WAVE's Alex Roe has nabbed the male lead in the film, starring opposite Italian actress Matilda Lutz. He will be playing Holt, who is the boyfriend to Lutz’s character and becomes distant from her after watching the tape. We also recently got our first behind-the-scenes look at Samara, which you can check out HERE.
Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka and Jacon Aaron Estes all had a hand in writing the script, which is based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki. RINGS will hit theaters November 13, 2015.
