Director and writer of the original Ghoulies want to reboot the franchise

In 1984, writer/director Luca Bercovici and his co-writer Jefery Levy introduced a bunch of hideous little creatures that, as far as I'm concerned, have not had nearly enough movies made about them: the GHOULIES (you can pick up the original film on region B/2 Blu-ray HERE). We only got three sequels out of the GHOULIES franchise before it went dormant, and a new GHOULIES movie hasn't been released since 1994… but if Bercovici and Levy have their way, those little creatures could be returning soon.

Graham Le Neve Painter, author of the upcoming book The Complete History of Ghoulies (which is available for pre-order HERE and is scheduled to be published in October), has informed the followers of the Ghoulies Movies Facebook page that Bercovici and Levy are currently rallying franchise rights holder Sony Pictures to let them make a GHOULIES reboot.

Bercovici also provided the following quotes on why they want to reboot GHOULIES now: 

An entire generation of kids grew up with “Ghoulies”, and were by turns frightened, horrified, disgusted, and laughing out loud hysterically. “Ghoulies” reach was – and is – legendary. Kids afraid to use the toilet for fear of the slimy green creature that may lurk below. “They Get You in the End”. That tagline has resonated through the decades; legions of people of a certain age will recognize it immediately, mostly likely with a smile, for “Ghoulies” is forever imbedded in that generation’s childhood, remembered almost fondly; that first time when they saw in the theater, or on the shelves at Blockbuster. “Mom, can we get “Ghoulies?”, was the bête noir of every mother in the 80’s.

Although there were very dark themes at play in “Ghoulies”, a deadly archetypal struggle between father and son, and the allure of following your father’s footsteps into the “dark side”, the Ghoulies themselves were fun, accessible, largely without guile, unabashedly they were what they were; primal little creatures, not inherently evil, but absorbed the characteristics of their “master”. The Ghoulies were like children; disgusting, green, and slimy, but weirdly cute, children with their own warped sense of humor. Part of the fun of the movie was waiting to see what kind of ridiculously grotesque shenanigans they would get into next.

“Ghoulies” transcended its original generation and was embrace by the following generation who loved the weirdly strange and goofy world of the Ghoulies. The cult of “Ghoulies” has grown legion of the decades; this legion of old fans and a whole generation of new fans crave for a new “Ghoulies” for the new millennium.

I know I'm craving a new GHOULIES movie, and have been for twenty-five years.

Bercovici and Levy are asking fans to help spread the word that they want to make a new GHOULIES, and to let Sony know that there are fans who want this movie to happen by posting on social media and/or sending e-mails.

According to Painter, the duo are pitching a few different takes on the concept, including one that Levy has said would combine live action, CGI, and holographic imaging.
