Curs>r: Asa Butterfield, Robert Englund star in Netflix release

Genre icon Robert Englund has a role in season 4 of the Netflix series Stranger Things, and Netflix will also be releasing Englund's latest movie. The streaming service has forked over a sum in the high seven figures to acquire the worldwide distribution rights to the horror film Curs>r, which stars Englund, Asa Butterfield (Hugo), Iola Evans (The 100), and Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan).

Filmed in the UK, Curs>r recently wrapped production. The story centers on 

a broke college dropout (Iola Evans) who decides to play an obscure, 1980s survival computer game in pursuit of an unclaimed $125,000 prize. But the game curses her, and she’s faced with dangerous choices and reality-warping challenges. After a series of unexpectedly terrifying moments, she realizes she’s no longer playing for the money, but for her life.

Kate Fleetwood (Harlots), Ryan Gage (The Musketeers), Angela Griffin (Coronation Street), George Taylor (Wanderlust), Ioanna Kimbook (Flatmates), and newcomer Joe Bolland are also in the cast.

Toby Meakins made his feature directorial debut on Curs>r, working from a screenplay by Simon Allen, creator of the BBC America series The Watch. The film was produced by Sebastien Raybaud and John Zois of Anton, along with Stigma Films' Matthew James Wilkinson. Allen served as executive producer, as did Nick Angel and Liza Glucoft.

We've seen movies like this before, but it will be interesting to see how Curs>r executes the killer video game concept. According to the film's IMDb page, Robert Englund is playing himself in this, so it will also be interesting to see just how Englund is involved with the killer game part of the story.

Netflix has not yet announced when they plan to release Curs>r. We'll have to wait to find out which is going to reach the streamer first: Stranger Things season 4, or this movie.
