The Guillermo del Toro-produced MAMA was a big hit both domestically and internationally as well as with audiences who dug its eerie tone and genuine scares. The films distributor Universal is also pleased with the supernatural thriller’s success to the point that a sequel is now being considered, according to Screen Daily who spoke with Universal’s David Kosse on the matter.
Kosse told Screen Daily that the prospects of a sequel were good, stating,
“We think there’s potential for a MAMA franchise. We’d like to do another one. But those conversations are in the early stages.”
Starring Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, MAMA reached number one at the box office when it opened in January. The film has grossed an estimated $89 million worldwide on an estimated $15 million budget, making it a no-brainer that a sequel would be considered.
If a sequel does move forward I hope that del Toro is involved in some capacity and would love to see Andres Muschietti come back to helm. Considering that Kosse stated that it’s still too early in the game to say anything definite, I’m sure the folks at Universal would get behind a potential franchise 100% as it seems to be proven box office success. I’m up for another round with MAMA. How about you?
