Child’s Play remake casts Aubrey Plaza & Brian Tyree Henry?

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

A few weeks back we passed along the news (rumor) that Liv Tyler (THE LORD OF THE RINGS, THE STRANGERS) was in talks to take the lead in MGM's upcoming reboot of CHILD'S PLAY from director Lars Klevberg (POLAROID). And today we have word via Collider that the remake may have found its cast… and it's not Tyler.

And while it's kinda sad that Chucky (or whatever this new dolls name will be) won't be squaring off with Liv Tyler, I'm not mad that it seems LEGION star Aubrey Plaza is now the front-runner for the role of (possibly) Andy's Mom, played in Tom Holland's original film by Catherine Hicks.

And on top of that bit of casting, Collider also says that ATLANTA star Brian Tyree Henry has joined the film as well and they speculate that he will be playing the role of Detective Mike Norris, who was played by Chris Sarandon in the original flick.

Plot details remain under wraps but supposedly the film, which is penned by KUNG FURY 2 writer Tyler Burton Smith with STEPHEN KING'S IT producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith producing, is a contemporary reboot involving:

A group of kids (ala STRANGER THINGS), and a technologically-advanced doll that enters their world.

Universal owns the home entertainment rights, though it seems like MGM figured out a way to move forward with this reboot. Evidently, Don Mancini can still move ahead with his recently announced CHILD'S PLAY: THE TV SERIES

For those who may have forgotten, the original followed the tale of

Gunned down by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon), dying murderer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) uses black magic to put his soul inside a doll named Chucky — which Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) then buys for her young son, Andy (Alex Vincent). When Chucky kills Andy's babysitter, the boy realizes the doll is alive and tries to warn people, but he's institutionalized. Now Karen must convince the detective of the murderous doll's intentions before Andy becomes Chucky's next victim.

The original 1988 film was directed by Tom Holland from a screenplay written by Don Mancini. It starred Catherine Hicks, Dinah Manoff, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent, and Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. Not much else is known about the remake at this time, but we will make sure to keep you guys up-to-date on the film as it heads towards filming this September!
