Earlier this year we learned that a remake of the incredibly popular 1996 teen witch movie THE CRAFT is expected to start filming in July, so it shouldn't be long before we hear the names of all the actors who will be playing the teen witches of a new generation.
The first casting announcement: Cailee Spaeny, whose credits include PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING and BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE, is in negotiations to star in the film.
The new version of THE CRAFT will be directed by Zoe Lister-Jones, working from a screenplay she has written with Daniel Casey. The synopsis:
When starting at a new school, Hannah befriends Tabby, Lourdes, and Frankie & quickly becomes the fourth member of their clique. Hannah soon learns that she somehow brings a great power to the quartet.
A casting call describes the Lourdes character:
Over 18 to play 17. Transgender, to play Latina, a punk rocker, Lourdes is the second member of the teenaged Clique. Her super-Catholic mother threw her out for being trans and she now lives with her 80 year old abuela, who has taught Lourdes a variety of supernatural practices… LEAD. SEEKING TRANSGENDER GIRLS/WOMEN.
When Leigh Janiak was attached to direct the film a few years ago and was writing the script with Phil Graziadei, it was actually going to be in continuity with the original film, set 20 years after the events we saw happen in '96. Now that THE CRAFT is in different hands, it's not clear if that will still be the case or if this will be a straightforward remake.
Columbia and Blumhouse are financing THE CRAFT, with Jason Blum producing alongside Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher of Red Wagon Entertainment. Red Wagon's Lucas Wiesendanger and original CRAFT director Andrew Fleming serve as executive producers.
