American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has said that eventually there will be a "very bizarre" season of the show that will feature returning characters from the Murder House and Coven seasons. But that crossover will not be happening next year.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour, Murphy had this to say about the crossover:

We're working on it, but that's not going to be [Season 8]. That will probably be the one after that. We've already met about it and outlined it. But it won't be next because some of the [cast members] are not available."

With another season to fill before the series can get to the Murder House/Coven mash-up, Murphy has decided to make a season 8 that will take American Horror Story somewhere it has never gone before: the future.

Murphy didn't reveal exactly what the story is for season 8, only that it

takes place in the future. It's still topical, but [set in] the future, which I've never done… I think people will like it. It's different from what we've done before."

It will be interesting to see just what sort of future setting the show will be dealing with, but Murphy has been clear that American Horror Story won't be following in the footsteps of Leprechaun, Pinhead, and Jason – the season won't be set in space.

Whatever the idea is, it went over well the head of FX:

I pitched it to [FX boss] John Landgraf today right after his TCA panel, and he loved it, but he’s asked me not to say what it is. I told him and he fell out of his chair with joy."

American Horror Story season 8 is expected to begin airing on FX this fall.
