Kevin Costner’s Horizon saddles up for a late Summer production start

Kevin Costner is ready to get back on the horse, and by that, I mean behind the camera for a period Western he’s calling Horizon. The Yellowstone actor will be pulling out all the stops for this project as its director, star, and producer through his Territory Pictures label. Kevin Costner’s Horizon is the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since 2003’s Open Range, in which he starred alongside Robert Duvall, Diego Luna, Annette Bening, Abraham Benrubi, and Michael Gambon. Production for Horizon will start on August 29 in Utah.

Per Deadline, Kevin Costner’s Horizon chronicles a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. While speaking with Deadline about the film, which has been a passion project of his for several years, Costner said, “America’s expansion into the West was one that was fraught with peril and intrigue from the natural elements, to the interactions with the indigenous peoples who lived on the land and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it.” Costner added, Horizon tells the story of that journey in an honest and forthcoming way, highlighting the points of view and consequences of the characters’ life and death decisions.”

Casting for Kevin Costner’s Horizon begins in February.

While fans of Costner’s work wait for more details about Horizon, they can hang their hats on the success of Yellowstone, in which Costner stars as John Dutton. It was recently reported that Yellowstone wrangled over 10 million total viewers for its season four finale. Yellowstone is the number one series of 2021 across Broadcast, Cable, and Premium for both the 18-49 and 25-54 demo, a key metric for advertisers. Breaking down the numbers, 9.3 million total viewers tuned in on the Paramount Network while its simulcast on CMT pushed the viewership to 10.3 million total viewers. This makes the season four finale of Yellowstone the most-watched cable telecast on cable since The Walking Dead season three premiere in October of 2017. Chris McCarthy, President, and CEO, ViacomCBS Media Networks, had this to say about the season finale numbers:

Yellowstone continues to shatter records with more than 11 million viewers tuning in to the season finale, proving we’ve hit a cultural nerve – from the center of the country to each of the coasts – and still have lots of room to grow on linear. Our strategy to franchise Yellowstone into a universe of series to fuel growth for Paramount+ is already exceeding expectations with 1883 and Mayor of Kingstown proving to be two of the top titles.”
