Holt McCallany & Anna Torv to headline David Fincher’s Mindhunters

David Fincher may have given us more than a few of our generation's best films, but unfortunately he hasn't had the best luck in the small-screen department as of late. The director was developing two projects with HBO, Videosynchrazy and Utopia, but ultimately production on both projects was halted and, in the case of Videosynchrazy, after several episodes had already been filmed. As was announced late last year, David Fincher, along with Charlize Theron, is setting up a new series at Netflix based upon the 1996 book “Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit”, written by John Douglas and Mark Olshanker.

The new series is still in development, but we now know who will be headlining Fincher's new foray into the world of serial killers. Holt McCallany (JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK) will star in the 1979 set series as the "inquisitive and skilled FBI Agent Bill Tench" who, along with FBI agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), will spend his time interviewing serial killers in order to help them solve current murders. Anna Torv (Fringe) will also star in Mindhunters as a psychologist by the name of Wendy.

As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed, and studied scores of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein, who dressed himself in his victims' peeled skin. Using his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey, Douglas examines each crime scene, reliving both the killer's and the victim's actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves.

David Fincher and Charlize Theron will both serve as executive producers of Mindhunter with Fincher also stepping in to direct; how many episodes he will direct is uncertain, but it seems likely that he will follow the same model that he did with House of Cards and set the stage by directing the first episode (or two). The ingredients all sound fantastic to me, but until Netflix actually debuts this series, I probably shouldn't hold my breath should I?
