While director Kenny Ortega's 1993 film HOCUS POCUS didn't set the box office aflame when it debuted, there's no denying the movie's enduring legacy. In the twenty-six years since the flick magicked its way into theaters, HOCUS POCUS has developed quite the cult following. The legions of fans desperately hoping for a sequel must finally have uttered the correct incantation, as the sequel is finally moving forward.
According to Collider, Workaholics writer and producer Jen D'Angelo has been tapped to write the script for HOCUS POCUS 2, which is currently in the works at Disney Plus. However, it seems that D'Angelo has an even more daunting task to attend to, as she's also been assigned to bring back original cast members Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. The three played witches Winifred, Sarah, and Mary respectively in the film. Currently none of the three actresses are attached to the project.
The project is still very much in its early stages, so little is known about the potential story at this time. I could envision a scenario where Winifred, Sarah, and Mary return to pass the torch to a new generation of witches however. Omri Katz played the young male lead of Max in the original alongside actresses Thora Birch and Vinessa Shaw. No word on whether they might return although Doug Jones, who played Billy Butcherson in the original, expressed an interest in returning for the sequel last year.
