Hocus Pocus 2 breaks record for biggest opening weekend for a streaming movie

Hocus Pocus 2, streaming ratings

Despite claims that watching Hocus Pocus 2 could unleash hell, the long-belated Disney sequel has done very well for the streaming service. In fact, Hocus Pocus 2 has actually broken the record for the most minutes viewed for a streaming movie with 2.7 billion minutes. Yep, that’s billion with a capital B.

This is according to Nielsen’s weekly streaming chart for the period of September 26 to October 2. The previous record holder for most minutes viewed for a streaming movie was Encanto, which had 2.2 billion minutes of viewing minutes. As you can see, Hocus Pocus 2 pretty much blew that record out of the water. The demographic for the sequel was also widely varied, with 2-11-year-old, 18-34-year-old, and 35-49-year-old each accounting for one-quarter of the audience. Despite the impressive performance of Hocus Pocus 2, it wasn’t the top streaming project as Netflix’s Dahmer series easily took the top spot with 4.37 billion minutes viewed. Serial killers trump witches apparently. You can check out the full list below.

  • Dahmer (Netflix) – 4.370B
  • Hocus Pocus 2 (Disney+) – 2.725B
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Prime Video) – 966M
  • House of the Dragon (HBO Max) – 907M
  • Lou (Netflix) – 802M
  • Cocomelon (Netflix) – 782M
  • Hocus Pocus (Disney+) 774M
  • NCIS (Netflix) – 748M
  • In The Dark (Netflix) – 665M
  • Cobra Kai (Netflix) – 653M

It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters, and they are looking for revenge,” reads the official Disney synopsis. “Now it is up to three high-school students to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallow’s Eve.” Given the success of Hocus Pocus 2, what are the chances of a sequel? Sarah Jessica Parker told Extra last month that Bette Midler is “already starting rumors” about a third installment. “I hitch my wagon to her star,” Parker said. “If she wants to do a third one… No one says no to the Divine Miss M.” The actress added that Midler was the one who kept hope for the sequel alive all these years, so if Hocus Pocus 3 does happen, it will be up to her.
