It’s been a bit of a rocky-road (pun intended) for Dwayne Johnson post-Black Adam, with news breaking last week that the tentpole may not be getting a sequel. Now, Dark Horizons is reporting that the chances of a sequel to Hobbs & Shaw are also looking bleak. Despite the movie laying the groundwork for sequels with a loose plot thread or two, the producer of the film, Kelly McCormick, who is also the wife of the director, David Leitch, commented on the stilted progress.
There are no conversations at this time. I do feel like there were a lot of seeds planted to try to create a spinoff in a way that included a Kevin Hart and a Ryan Reynolds and sort of all that kind of stuff. That was intentional but not necessarily because we had plans in mind, just because it would be fun to have different players for them to play with if anybody or we wanted to go for it in a different way. So, you know, I don’t know, I mean, Dwayne’s a really busy guy, and you know, he would be the one to motivate all of that. So, you know, we’re ready if he wants to, and until then, he’s just dominating, so all power to him.”
Johnson’s movie career has a little-known, long-forgotten graveyard of projects in development that haven’t seen the light of day. At one time, he was tapped to star in a Spy Hunter movie, a Johnny Bravo movie, a Big Trouble in Little China remake, and many other projects that fell through. As Johnson has become a business machine with a movie career, a television show, and now, a football league, it’s hard to see which projects find priority, especially since he also wanted to set up for a big Black Adam/Superman showdown.
Meanwhile, the Fast & Furious franchise will finally be concluding with the first of a planned two-part finale, Fast X, that’s set for 2023.
