His Dark Materials season 3 production has begun

HBO and BBC One have begun production on the third and final season of His Dark Materials. The eight-episode presentation is based on "The Amber Spyglass," the final novel in Phillip Pullman's legendary fantasy trilogy. Production has been set up at Wolf Studios Wales and on location throughout Wales and England.

To mark the show's production start, HBO shared a photo of Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson celebrating the first take of the new season.

Season 3 is poised to be the show's most ambitious yet as Will (Amir Wilson), the bearer of The Subtle Knife, and Lyra (Dafne Keen), the prophesized child, travel through multiple worlds to find and protect each other.

Returning to the series is Dafne Keen as Lyra, Amir Wilson as Will, Ruth Wilson as Mrs. Coulter, Simone Kirby as Mary Malone, Will Keen as Father President McPhail, Jade Anouka as Ruta Skadi, Ruta Gedminstas as Serafina Pekkala, and James McAvoy as Lord Asriel.

Newly added cast members include Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Commander Ogunwe, Jamie Ward as Father Gomez, Kobna Holbrook-Smith; Simon Harrison and Chipo Chung are the rebel angels “Balthamos, Baruch and Xaphania. Lastly, Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe plays Ama.

Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, said, “It has been a joy watching audiences embrace this incredible journey of self-discovery, friendship, and purpose with Lyra over the past two seasons. Jane, Dan, and everyone on the Bad Wolf team have done such a tremendous job bringing Philip’s beloved world to life, and I cannot wait for the fans to get a front-row seat to all that is in store in this gripping and poignant final chapter.”

Amit Gupta, Charles Martin, and Weronika Tofilska will be your directors for the final season of His Dark Materials. Will you be ready to wave goodbye to the daemons and danger that Pullman's story delivers when the final season comes to a close?
