Highlander 2 (1991) Christopher Lambert – WTF Happened to this Sci Fi Movie?

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Though Highlander (WATCH IT HERE) wasn't a success initially, strong word-of-mouth mixed with the booming home video market helped it grow into a fantasy-action classic. Highlander helped introduce Christopher Lambert to an American audience (In his first English language role) and gave a young Clancy Brown his breakout performance as The Kurgan. With it turning into a pop culture phenomenon, Director Russell Mulcahy, alongside the original producers, set off to make a different yet respectful sequel to the original. The only problem was the finite ending with Connor MacLeod killing off  The Kurgan and winning the prize.

The journey of Highlander 2 (WATCH IT HERE / OWN THE BEST CUT OF THE FILM HERE) is a fascinating one. From changing genres to retconning most of the mythology the first film established, Highlander 2, had difficulty proving its necessity. Matters got worse when filming in Argentina during their economic collapse caused the bonding company to take the film hostage, shutting out the director and producers. The original cut of Highlander 2 was essentially a financial cut that was disowned by everyone involved. Over the years, many cuts were made trying to hone in on the original vision and tone director Russell Mulcahy was aiming for.

In the latest episode of our WTF HAPPENED TO THIS HORROR MOVIE video series, we dig into the making of Highlander 2 and all of its different cuts to find out what exactly happened with one of the strangest sequels ever made.
