Heroes and villains revealed in Alita: Battle Angel character posters

I should know never to bet against James Cameron, but I'll admit to being hesitant about ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL. It'd be all too easy to assume that Cameron's long-delayed passion-project, which he finally passed to Robert Rodriguez, has all the makings of a CG-fueled big-budget flop, but the first reactions to the film have been surprisingly positive. With the release of the cyber-punk action flick now less than a month away, 20th Century Fox have released a handful of character posters showing off Alita (Rosa Salazar), Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz), Chiren (Jennifer Connelly), Zapan (Ed Skrein), and more. Check them out!

Our own Paul Shirey got to check out ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL for himself earlier this month and his reactions certainly surprised me. Calling the film a "wild, visceral ride," Shirey said that the film offers "kick-ass action, an immersive virtual world and a surprising amount of emotional weight. Everything rests on you loving the character of Alita and she is fully fleshed out; strong, flawed, endearing and rebellious." The visual spectacle is obviously front and center, but Shirey says that it's not without investment, with many of the CG characters breaking free of their digital origins to emerge as fully-rounded individuals.

The official synopsis for ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL:

When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL will hit theaters on February 14, 2019.
