2019 was truly a landmark year for cinema. The year brought us dynamic blockbusters like AVENGERS: ENDGAME, poignant and heartfelt tales like MARRIAGE STORY, and old school moviestar vehicles like FORD V FERRARI. Award season is in full swing with the Golden Globes already in the rearview mirror and the BAFTA nominations just announced. However, lets be honest, the only awards ceremony that the majority of the public cares about is the Academy Awards, finally the nominations are here.
As always there were some snubs and surprises like Greta Gerwig missing out in the Best Director category and Rian Johnson getting a writing nomination for KNIVES OUT. (Also no Best Animated Feature nomination for FROZEN II?? Eh guess I'll just have to let that one go.) This year JOKER led the way with eleven total nominations including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Score, and Best Picture. After an almost twenty year hiatus Tom Hanks was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD and after being passed over multiple times, Scarlett Johannson was nominated twice for JOJO RABBIT and MARRIAGE STORY.
