Henry Cavill won’t be returning to The Witcher after Superman exit

After appearing in the mid-credits sequence in Black Adam, Henry Cavill announced that he would be returning as Superman, fulfilling the wishes of fans who have wanted to see him back in the role for years. Just days later, it was announced that Henry Cavill would also be stepping down from The Witcher, with the role of Geralt to be played by Liam Hemsworth starting with the fourth season. With last night’s reveal that Henry Cavill won’t be playing Superman in the new DC Universe after all, some have wondered if this means he would be returning to The Witcher.

Unfortunately, many outlets (including Variety) have reported that these recent developments won’t impact Henry Cavill’s future on The Witcher. While Cavill’s departure from the Netflix series may have been influenced by his Superman return, it reportedly wasn’t the only reason. Reports stated that Cavill had been pushing for the series to be more accurate to the source material but wasn’t always successful. “The toughest part for me was finding that balance between the showrunners’ vision and my love for the books, and trying to bring that Geralt to the showrunners’ vision,” Cavill said. “All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.” In handing the character over to Liam Hemsworth, Cavill said: “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.“

While we may not see Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel, we still have one more season of The Witcher with the actor to look forward to. As for Netflix, the streaming service has tried to reassure fans that Liam Hemsworth will be a great fit for Geralt. “Henry is an extraordinary Geralt and I think Liam will continue and also be an extraordinary Geralt,” Netflix’s head of scripted series Peter Friedlander told Variety. “There has been a legacy of of amazing, iconic characters where the actors have changed and we’re hugely optimistic about this. We will continue to honor the IP, the fans, the storytelling, all the way through.“
