Is Henry Cavill Still Superman? Warner Bros. and Actor in Talks

Man of Steel, Superman, Henry Cavill, Is Henry Cavill Still Superman

Well, damn! Here's a bit of news which should make many of you quite happy – According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is currently in talks with Henry Cavill to reprise his role of Superman for a future movie in the DCEU. Is Henry Cavill still Superman? Looks like it! Sadly, it doesn't appear as though Warner Bros. is developing a full-fledged sequel to MAN OF STEEL at this time, but Cavill could put in an appearance in any of the DCEU movies which will get started once the COVID-19 shutdown comes to an end, including SHAZAM 2, BLACK ADAM, or AQUAMAN 2.

Henry Cavill has played Clark Kent/Superman in MAN OF STEEL, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and JUSTICE LEAGUE, and he certainly won many fans over the course of those films, particularly as the actor seems to be a genuine fan of the character and wants to see him properly realized on the big-screen. With last week's announcement that Zack Snyder will be bringing his vision of JUSTICE LEAGUE to HBO Max next year, we'll be getting a little more of Cavill's Superman to tide us over, and this time, it will be without the incredibly distracting CG upper lip.

Cavill's tenure as Superman hasn't been entirely without criticism however, as some have taken issue with a few moments of his story, particularly when he broke General Zod's (Michael Shannon) neck in MAN OF STEEL in order to save an endangered family. According to Cavill in 2018, this moment was setting the stage for a bigger story which would have set Superman on the path to becoming the more traditional version we know.

The killing of Zod would have led to a wonderful reason why Superman never kills. Not, he never kills just because his dad said so one day. He made the decision himself because of an impossible scenario, to which he then said, ‘I don't care if it's impossible again, I'm gonna find a way to make it possible in the impossible.'

As for the future of Superman, Henry Cavill had pointed to "Superman: For Tomorrow," a comic-arc which found Superman dealing with the disappearance of a million people off the face of the Earth, including Lois Lane, as the type of story he'd like a future film to tackle. "I would definitely like to tell a story like that," Cavill said. "There's an opportunity to keep on telling Superman stories, and getting them exactly right. Showing the things like hope and joy and that wonderful power of his to make people believe in themselves." I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will led to Cavill getting the chance to star in a standalone Superman film once again.
