The Ritual and The Night House director David Bruckner is rebooting the Hellraiser film franchise with a movie that will be released through the Hulu streaming service. Nearly a year has gone by since we’ve heard anything substantial about the project (which began filming last September), but now we finally have an update: Bruckner’s Hellraiser has been screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association and has officially earned an R rating! The movie got its R for “strong bloody horror violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual content and brief graphic nudity.” That definitely sounds like a proper Hellraiser movie.
Producer David S. Goyer came up with the story for the new film, and the screenplay was written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (Super Dark Times). Based on Clive Barker’s novella The Hellbound Heart, the original Hellraiser was about
a puzzle box that opens a gateway to a horrific world and Cenobites, mutilated beings dedicated to torture and led by one nicknamed Pinhead. The movie quickly achieved cult status, spawning a franchise that would encompass ten movies, comics, and merchandise, with Pinhead and his visage at the center of it.
Bruckner’s film stars Odessa A’Zion (Let’s Scare Julie), Brandon Flynn (13 Reasons Why), Goran Visnjic (The Boys), Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), Adam Faison (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay), Aoife Hinds (Anne Boleyn), and Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049), with Jamie Clayton (Sense8) as Pinhead.
This take on Hellraiser is coming to us from Spyglass Media Group. Franchise creator Clive Barker produced the film alongside Goyer. Barker is also currently working on an HBO Max Hellraiser series that’s headed up by David Gordon Green, Mark Verheiden, and Michael Dougherty.
Now that the new Hellraiser has a rating, we should be hearing details about the Hulu release plan very soon. Are you looking forward to this movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
