Train to Busan (watch it HERE) director Yeon Sang-ho’s six episode Netflix series Hellbound is not part of the streaming service’s Netflix & Chills line-up and apparently won’t be available to watch on Netflix during the Halloween season – but some viewers are going to have the chance to watch it soon anyway. The series is set to make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, with screenings on September 9th, 11th, and 14th. A digital premiere screening will follow on September 16th. Ahead of these screenings, a trailer has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Based on the webtoon The Hell, which Yeon Sang-ho created with Choi Kyu-seok (the pair also wrote this series together), Hellbound takes place in
a world where creatures by a supernatural phenomenon suddenly appear and begin dragging people on earth to hell.
According to the TIFF page, Hellbound is about
a nation coping with a new phenomenon of “sinners” literally condemned, and a religious sect on the rise, led by Jung Jin-soo (Yoo Ah-in). Investigating the phenomenon of “proclamations” and ritualistic murders is police detective Jin Kyung-hoon (Yang Ik-june). Examining the mysterious sect are broadcast journalist Bae Young-jae (Park Jeong-min) and lawyer of the accused sinners Min Hey-jin (Kim Hyun-joo). Together, these three investigators search for answers in this wildly original commentary on the growing anxieties of a nation.
The show sounds interesting to me, and Train to Busan was good enough to guarantee that I’ll check out any other genre projects the director happens to make… even if it takes me a while. (I still haven’t gotten around to watching Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula.)
