HBO creating docuseries based on the hit book I’ll Be Gone in the Dark

In-depth true crime docuseries like MAKING A MURDERER and THE KEEPERS have been becoming increasingly popular in the binge watch era, as fascinating true stories unfold over several episodes. Now, news has been announced that HBO has acquired the rights to the new, best-selling book, “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Search for the Golden State Killer”, and will turn it into a new docuseries for us all to obsess over.

The book by Michelle McNamara, the late wife of comedian Patton Oswalt, dives deep into the heart of a terrifying mystery revolving around a serial killer who committed over 50 home invasion sexual assaults, and later 10 murders, across the 70s and 80s in California. The perpetrator has eluded police for decades, and McNamara spent years digging into the mystery and pouring over the details with an obsessive, fiery passion until her untimely passing in 2016. The book was later finished by her research assistant, Paul Haynes, and a colleague, Billy Jensen, and released this year to rave reviews and becoming an instant #1 New York Times Bestseller.

Oswalt will executive produce the series, and said in a statement that, “HBO taking on this story will advance the passionate pursuit that Michelle shared with dozens of men and women in law enforcement – to solve the mystery of one of California’s most notorious serial killers.”

I am reading the book right now, and it’s as terrifying as it expertly researched, written in an engaging prose that could absorb even the newest of newbies into the world of true crime. McNamara clearly had a gift and passion for articulating this subject matter, and the book is a testament to her work and talent. The content will make for a riveting documentary series, and maybe we will even uncover some new information about “The Golden State Killer” along the way!
