We’re just a day away from the release of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+ which not only sees the return of Ewan McGregor as the titular character but also the triumphant return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. I say triumphant because despite his polarizing reception in the role beginning over 20 years ago in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and concluding in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, time has softened that reception and now fans are stoked for his second coming. With all this fanfare, thoughts of a Darth Vader spinoff series can’t help but come up and Christensen is down to explore that idea.
During a chat with Digital Spy, Christensen brought up the prospect of doing a possible spinoff series that would focus on Darth Vader. Probably feeling the renewed love for his return on Obi-Wan Kenobi, Christensen appears completely down for the opportunity if it were to arise:
“If the opportunity presents itself, I would be all for it. I think this is a character that is very complex, and there’s a lot there to further explore. If the powers that be were so inclined, I would be so excited to get to do so.”
It would appear that, if they wanted to do a spinoff series, the best time period to work in would be between the prequels and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. His story has been pretty well chronicled during the end of the Old Republic via Revenge of the Sith and at the tail end of the Empire during the original Star Wars trilogy. The time between the prequels and the start of A New Hope could see some great story opportunities should any writer want to explore them. Multiple books and comics have previously examined part his journey during this period so there could be some opportunities for a series story arc if Lucasfilm is interested.
Would YOU want to see Hayden Christensen in a Darth Vader spinoff series? In the meantime, you can catch the actor’s return as Darth Vader on Obi-Wan Kenobi, hitting Disney+ tomorrow, May 27, 2022.
