Like many of us, Michael Dougherty appears to have been a fan of Netflix's Stranger Things. The TRICK 'R TREAT / KRAMPUS director is now at the helm of GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, and he has put two of the Netflix show's cast members in the sequel to 2014's GODZILLA. Millie Bobby Brown, who had the breakthrough role of Eleven on Stranger Things, is playing one of the leads, and now she has been joined in the GODZILLA cast by Randy Havens, who played school teacher Mr. Clarke on the show.
Dougherty announced the casting of Havens himself on his Twitter account, his tweet indicating that Havens' character will be a member of the scientific organization Monarch, which was introduced in the '14 GODZILLA and also played a part in this year's KONG: SKULL ISLAND.
Although it had been said that Ken Watanabe would be the only cast member to return from the previous GODZILLA, reprising the role of Monarch member / Godzilla fan Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, it has since been revealed that there is another cast member who's coming back – Sally Hawkins as Serizawa's cohort Vivienne Graham.
I was glad to hear that Hawkins would be in GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, as she had a very thankless and overlooked role in GODZILLA. It would have almost felt rude if she were just left out of the sequel.
KING OF THE MONSTERS' cast also includes Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Charles Dance. Written by Dougherty and his KRAMPUS co-writer Zach Shields, the film is scheduled to be released on March 22, 2019.
