Listen, it’s not that I have anything against HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS. It’s just that I don’t really see an audience for it. Sure, its got a great cast and a talented director, but the film’s concept seems to be an unlikely marriage of THE BROTHERS GRIMM by way of BLADE. At least that’s the vibe I’m getting from the second red band trailer, which has just made it to the interwebs.
At best, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS seems like a good “rainy afternoon” pic, a hopefully above average bit of matinee fair. I can get behind that idea without complaint– it’s just the hard “R” rated approach that befuddles me. I mean, it’s called goddamn HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS. On paper, you have to admit it sounds a bit Disney-ish (I’m thinking Bruckheimer, but it would also probably work animated). If nothing else, the film should prove to be an interesting experiment in genre mashing.
My ramblings aside, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS hits theaters January 25th with the impressive cast of Gemma Arterton, Jeremy Renner, Peter Stormare, Famke Janssen, Derek Mears, Thomas Mann and Zoe Bell. The film is the stateside debut of DEAD SNOW director Tommy Wirkola, who, based on the trailer, looks to be fine tuning his unique directorial cocktail of comedy, action and horror. With that in mind, enjoy the witch hunting shenanigans below.
