Halloween TV series: Miramax has secured the rights and is plotting a cinematic universe

A couple weeks ago, we heard that Malek Akkad’s Trancas International Films was shopping the TV rights to the Halloween franchise around Hollywood, looking to get a TV series set up. Trancas is the sole owner of the franchise’s television rights, while Miramax co-owns the film rights with them – and at the time, Miramax was in a bidding war with A24 (which already has a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake in development) over the rights to make the show. Now Deadline reports that Miramax has come out the winner of that bidding war, with Miramax Television securing “a wide-ranging deal with Trancas to develop and co-produce a Halloween TV series, which also includes a first-look agreement on other television projects for the international marketplace.”

Deadline goes on to say that the Halloween TV series is “envisioned to potentially launch a cinematic universe spanning film and television.”

Miramax’s Head of Global TV Marc Helwig will be overseeing the franchise creatively, collaborating closely with Akkad. Helwig provided the following statement: “We couldn’t be more excited to bring Halloween to television. We are thrilled to expand our long and successful partnership with Trancas and the brilliant Malek Akkad in introducing this iconic franchise to a new form of storytelling and a new generation of fans.“

Akkad added, “Trancas International Films is extremely enthused to be expanding our long-standing relationship with Miramax, and we look forward to working with Marc Helwig and the entire team in creating this new chapter.“

Since the deal has just been made, no details have been revealed about how the Halloween TV series is going to be approaching the story of iconic masked slasher Michael Myers.

Halloween (and Crystal Lake) follow in the footsteps of Bates Motel and Chucky, which have brought iconic horror characters to the small screen for multiple seasons. While there was a Friday the 13th TV series in the ’80s, it didn’t have anything to do with Jason Voorhees or his mother… but Freddy Krueger did host an anthology series called Freddy’s Nightmares for a couple seasons.
