The following story just makes me like Paul Rudd even more. A key character from 1978's Halloween makes his return as Tommy Doyle and he's all grown up and out for blood in Halloween Kills. Brian Andrews played the character as a child in 1978 but Anthony Michael Hall takes on the role in the latest installment. Between Andrews and before Anthony Michael Hall, Paul Rudd played Tommy Doyle in 1995's Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers. It was Rudd's first screen credit although Clueless was released first which also featured Rudd in a prominent role. The Curse of Michael Myers is not highly disregarded by fans but Rudd has never dismissed his role in the film as his star has ascended over the years. In fact, according to director David Gordon Green, Paul Rudd was asked first to come back as Tommy Doyle in Halloween Kills.
During an interview with Anthony Michael Hall and David Gordon Green for Total Film, Green admitted he approached Rudd for the role because they previously worked together on Prince Avalanche. Green said that scheduling prohibited what he called a "novelty" idea but Rudd did give Anthony Michael Hall his blessing. Anthony Michael Hall said, "A couple of weeks into production David called me and said he had just spoken to Paul Rudd. I admire Paul's work a lot, so he gave me his blessing on the film, which was nice of him to do. But my take on the character is quite separate."
That's a cool thing of Paul Rudd to do and the fact that Rudd maybe even considered coming back is also interesting because it means he was open to it if scheduling had worked out. I'm sure Anthony Michael Hall will be great and he'll bring his own take to the character to please fans of the franchise.
Jamie Lee Curtis returns in Halloween Kills as Laurie Strode and judging from the teasers we have seen so far, it looks like it picks up right where the 2018 film left off. Also returning for the sequel is Judy Greer as Laurie's daughter Karen and Andi Matichak as Karen's daughter Allyson. Joining the fright is Anthony Michael Hall, taking on the role of Tommy Doyle from the original film, and Kyle Richards, reprising her role as Lindsey Wallace from the first film.
Do YOU think Paul Rudd should've returned as Tommy?
