Although we may love them, horror sequels typically follow the law of diminishing returns, but David Gordon Green's Halloween actually managed to rejuvenate the long-running horror franchise in a big way. The 2018 return of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) was a huge success and it was soon announced that the film would be followed by two sequels, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. The first sequel was supposed to have hit theaters last October, but COVID-19 put a stop to that and Universal was forced to push the film back.
Although we once again have a bit of a wait ahead of us, Michael Myers is still out there, just waiting to claim his next victim, and Total Film has a new image from Halloween Kills featuring Michael Myers ready to do his dark deeds.
Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green told Total Film that the sequel is "about the creation of fear," adding that, "It's one thing to be afraid of the Bogey Man, to have someone who might be in the closet, under the bed, creeping around your house… But we wanted to explore next was confusion, misinformation, and paranoia. What happens when fear goes viral? You can’t just stick your head under the covers any more." Green also said that the sequel will be much more action-packed than its predecessor.
When we made the last one we wanted to find a way for someone who’s never seen the original to get up to speed with the story. But this one gets right to the action. It’s very aggressive. It’s more efficient. We wanted it to be an explosive middle before things get streamlined and personal again.
Halloween Kills is slated to hit theaters on October 15, 2021, followed by Halloween Ends on October 14, 2022.
