HALLOWEEN is already making a killing at the box office, and it's only Saturday. Universal reported early this morning that the Jamie Lee Curtis-led slasher scored a jaw dropping $33.34 million opening day on Friday, thereby setting a new October record and and stealing the spotlight from the massiely profitable VENOM, which only two weeks ago debuted to $32.5 on its first day in theaters. The studio is currently projecting $80.3 million for the weekend, but I'm willing to bet it lands somewhere closer to $90 million.
David Gordon Green's direct sequel to John Carpenter's 1978 classic, the 2018 HALLOWEEN tells the story of an all grown up but severly traumatized Laurie Strode, who has been waiting patiently for forty years for Michael Myers to escape his cell at Smith's Grove, only so she can kill him on Halloween night. This is the tale of Laurie's revenge against the man who killed two of her best friends, five people in total, all those years ago in the quiet little town of Haddonfield, Illinois.
HALLOWEEN's record start is the second highest ever for an R-rated horror film, right behind Andy Muschietti's IT, which danced its way into theaters last year with an astonishing $50.4 million opening day. Horror has always performed well at the box office, but the numbers these recent gems have churned out is nothing short of impressive.
What do you think? Can Blumhouse's HALLOWEEN pull off an $80 million weekend? Will it make more or less? This writer is already planning on watching the movie again before the weekend's out — will you be there?
