Halle Berry cast as lead in Roland Emmerich’s disaster film Moonfall

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

So, it looks like after taking a break from planetary destruction with the WWII actioner MIDWAY (though that still had its share of overly CG explosions and devastation), director Roland Emmerich is back to his old tricks of finding new ways to f*ck up planet Earth. This time he's directing, producing, and co-writing the independent disaster film MOONFALL, about…well, the moon falling to Earth. Here's the official synopsis:

a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface and save our planet from annihilation.

Meanwhile, Halle Berry has just been announced to be playing the lead character of the film, "a NASA astronaut-turned-administrator whose previous space mission holds a clue about an impending catastrophe". She'll be joined by the previously cast Josh Gad, as "odd and unkempt in a way that suggests a high level of intelligence and an equally high level of disorganization. He is a genius who correctly predicts that the moon has fallen out of its orbit, thus making the space-obsessed, profoundly unfiltered and eccentric man one of the most important people on Earth." More big names are sure to come.

No official release date as of yet, but Lionsgate is hoping to release the film sometime theatrically next year.

But what do you guys think? Looking forward to more of Emmerich's disaster porn? If so, what are some of your favorites of his? Either way, sound off below!
