It was announced earlier this year that Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts had teamed with Legendary Entertainment to develop a live-action Gundam movie for Netflix. The adaptation of the iconic anime series is moving forward and Legendary took to Twitter to share the first look at a badass piece of concept art from the project.

Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise, Gundam has been described as a space opera depicting a battle waged between massive mechs and armies of space colonies fighting for independence from Earth. Jordan Vogt-Roberts has previously said that Gundam is “the grandfather to modern anime and thus most Japanese things that we love. It really is wild what Gundam was doing on television in an animated format in the ’70s and the complexity and the weight of the stories they were telling.

Brian K. Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) is writing the screenplay for the Gundam movie and Jordan Vogt-Roberts hopes that the project will appeal to hardcore Gundam fans as well as those who know nothing of the franchise. “My goal is to for all of the people who might say, ‘I don’t know where to start [with Gundam],’ I want to create this film and give them an access point where you can say, ‘This is where you start. This is your entry point,’” Vogt-Roberts said. “Where Gundam fans say, ‘Yeah, this is my Gundam.’ The Gundam franchise has grown into a juggernaut over the decades, with dozens of TV shows, video games, manga, and much more. Netflix’s Gundam movie doesn’t have a release date at the moment, but I’m excited to see what Jordan Vogt-Roberts is able to do with the franchise.

In addition to the Gundam movie, Jordan Vogt-Roberts is also working on an adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid video-game franchise. The project took a big step forward late last year when Oscar Isaac officially signed on to play Solid Snake.
