Guillermo del Toros Pans Labyrinth is going to be a Broadway musical?

Add another line of revenue to the old del Toro bank account…

Deadline has it that Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 hit PAN’S LABYRINTH is being turned into a Broadway musical, with Paul Williams writing the lyrics and two-time Oscar winner Gustavo Santaolalla (BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, BABEL) writing the music. Robert Fox is producing with del Toro and Gary Ungar.

“I admire and love Gustavo and Paul wrote the perfect album in Phantom Of The Paradise, which I have loved for decades,” del Toro beamed to the trade.”

Santaolalla reciprocated:

“I’m so excited about translating Guillermo’s magical vision into music and songs. I’m such a longtime fan of both Guillermo and Paul that to work on this with them is truly a dream come true.”

Could be cool I guess. I’d rather see this than that ill-fated SPIDERMAN musical or whatever the hell that was. AMERICAN PSYCHO was another that got the stage treatment, would have been interesting to scope that one. Still, I’ve long contended del Toro is creatively overextended and the work is starting to suffer because of it. PACIFIC RIM and CRIMSON PEAK better be the tits, otherwise he may end up as Peli or an Abrams, who primarily produce.

What says you? If given the chance, would you check out a PAN’S LABYRINTH musical?
