Unlike the barebones DVD version, new bonus content was created just for the release, including an audio commentary and an introduction by del Toro, two featurettes about the creates and a making-of retrospective, as well as deleted/alternate scenes, outtakes and storyboard animatics. The 1997 film is directed by Guillermo del Toro off a script he co-wrote with Matthew Robbins, which is based on a short story by Donald A. Wollheim. A disease carried by common cockroaches is killing Manhattan children. In an effort to stop the epidemic an entomologist, Susan Tyler, creates a mutant breed of insect that secretes a fluid to kill the roaches. This mutant breed was engineered to die after one generation, but three years later Susan finds out that the species has survived and evolved into a large, gruesome monster that can mimic human form.
