Last month it didn't sound like PACIFIC RIM 2 was going to happen, however in an interview with BuzzFeed, Guillermo Del Toro says he is still working on the script for the sequel, and he's developing it with X-MEN: THE LAST STAND and THE INCREDIBLE HULK screenwriter Zak Penn.
I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.
Many have speculated the next movie might be a prequel, however Del Toro says the script follows the events from the first movie, and includes the characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi).
Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.
Legendary Pictures hasn't officially agreed to produce the sequel yet, but Guillermo Del Toro says he's "proceeding like it is happening," and hopes to start working on PACIFIC RIM 2 after his next project.
While I would be interested in checking out PACIFIC RIM 2, I don't want Guillermo Del Toro wasting too much time and effort on a sequel when there are plenty of other projects he has talked about in the past I would rather see him work on instead. PACIFIC RIM 2 might not be dead, but it's also not alive and well either.
