Guillermo del Toro is a very busy man, often juggling several films at a time in various capacities either as a director, writer, or producer. Lately he's been keeping himself busy with his duties on FX's "The Strain", his upcoming horror film CRIMSON PEAK, working on the recently announced SILENT HILLS videogame, as well as producing the animated film THE BOOK OF LIFE. He also has an animated series based on PACIFIC RIM as well as the sequel to that film on his plate, but del Toro is looking even further ahead with plans for a potential third PAC RIM flick.
We've known for a while that del Toro was working towards PACIFIC RIM 2, with plans to show more of the Kaiju's homeworld in the sequel. In a recent interview with Collider del Toro shared where that project stands. del Toro says that the scriptwork has begun and that filming should begin late next year, sharing…
“We got the first draft of the movie now, and we are going to spend another 4-5 months on the screenplay before we start pre-production. We start pre-production next year in August-September and start shooting November-December next year.”
In talking about what we can expect in PACIFIC RIM 2, del Toro reveals his plans to expand the story into a trilogy of films, stating…
“…some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”
So there you have it! We can expect a lot more giant robot vs. kaiju action from del Toro with an animated series and two more sequels to PACIFIC RIM. Let's just hope his plans for a third PAC RIM flick works out better than his attempts at a third installment to HELLBOY (I'm still holding on to hope that HELLBOY 3 can still happen!). We'll keep you posted on news regarding PACIFIC RIM 2 & 3 as we hear it.
