Guillermo Del Toro isn’t the type of filmmaker to sit around and wait for projects to come to him. If what he wants to do isn’t coming together quickly enough, he’ll go out and develop something else… and that’s primarily what he’s doing right now as he tries to make heads or tails out of what might happen with PACIFIC RIM 2 and waits to sign his name to contract to direct FANTASTIC VOYAGE.
In the meantime, he’s going to throw his efforts into SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK, based on Alvin Schwartz’s trilogy of horror short story collections, for CBS Films. John August has penned the script which Del Toro will use as a starting point, but, given that he’s such a fan of Schwartz’s source materal (he owns ten of Stephen Gammell’s original illustrations for the books), he might head right on back to the pages in order to get the frights to his liking when all is said and done.
There is no timeline as to how quickly Del Toro might hope to get SCARY STORIES up and running, but with a rather sizable void in his working schedule right now, I would think things would start ramping up immediately to head into production by later this year.
