We don’t cover very many superhero flicks around these parts, but one that certainly has our attention is JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, which – as the title indicates – will revolve around a much darker group of superpowered vigilantes. The project, based on the DC comic books, will feature the likes of Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, and Deadman. The Fantastic Four, this group is not.
Guillermo del Toro has long been attached to the film adaptation of JLD, and you really can’t pick a better person to shepherd it; del Toro’s love of horrific outcasts makes him a natural fit for this movie. That said, del Toro is always swamped with movies, and it’s unfortunately looking like JLD is being pushed off the plate.
THR’s inside sources claim del Toro is no longer attached to JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK. as he’s too busy putting the finishing touches on CRIMSON PEAK and prepping PACIFIC RIM 2, which has a 2017 release date set. While we should wait for Guillermo to weigh in on this officially, it’s time to get used to the idea he may not have the time for Constantine and friends.
Created in 2011 by Peter Milligan, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Vol. 1 goes like this:
The witch known as The Enchantress has gone mad, unleashing a wave of chaos that not even the combined powers of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg can stop. Shade the Changing Man, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Zatanna, Mindwarp and John Constantine may be our only hope – but how can we put our trust in beings whose very presence makes ordinary people break out in a cold sweat?
So if Guillermo is out, who should step in? Maybe Sam Raimi is looking to get back in the superhero game?
