It's been nearly a month since word leaked that Guillermo del Toro's PACIFIC RIM sequel may be dead in the water. Since then, we've heard various reports that it might or might not happen, but the guessing game is soon coming to end. Del Toro recently Tweeted that he's awaiting the final script from Jon Spaihts (DOCTOR STRANGE, PROMETHEUS), after which the studio will make the final call as to whether or not audiences will be getting more jaeger-on-kaiju action.
For those of you who have seen the excellent documentary on making PROMETHEUS, Jon Spaihts wrote the original draft for the film before Damon Lindelof got his hands on it. Now, I don't hate the movie, but it certainly made more sense in Spaights' draft. With that said, I'd love to see what him and del Toro have cooked up for PACIFIC RIM 2. I know are lot of people weren't down with the over-simplification of the first film, but it hit all the right notes for me and I'm more than willing to make a return trip to that world. Here's hoping Universal feels the same way!
