We finally have confirmation that a sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s PACIFIC RIM is indeed actually going to happen, just in 2017. So that’s good news and bad news, I suppose. The bad being that it’s going to be a long wait before we see kaiju and jaeger fights on the big screen again—April 7, 2017 to be exact. Guillermo del Toro is a busy man so the fact that he can even make time for PACIFIC RIM 2 is pretty awesome.
"The characters I love will return," del Toro told BuzzFeed. "Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast."
Guillermo del Toro spilled some additional news on Legendary Entertainment’s official YouTube channel with the announcement of an animated series as well as the continuation of the comic book series. So it sounds like PACIFIC RIM fans have plenty to look forward in the future. Zak Penn (X-MEN: THE LAST STAND) is working on the script, and original screenwriter Travis Beacham is working on the sequel and overall franchise development as well.
The only real problem with a release date so far away is the simple fact that a whole hell of a lot can change between now and then. So excuse me while I hold off on being excited for this one. I'll be over there in the corner minding my own business if you guys need anything.
