Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con got to see the first teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 and while most trailers that debuted at the big event this weekend were soon released online for the general public, the Guardians trailer was reserved for the eyes of those sitting in the room. Some fans were upset that the Guardians trailer wasn’t released to the public soon after, and director James Gunn reveals why that choice was made.
A fan questioned James Gunn on Twitter about why the trailer wasn’t released to the public after premiering at SDCC. The fan thought it was strictly a Marvel decision, but James Gunn said that the decision was also his because, why he does love the trailer, the VFX isn’t where he wants it for repeated consumption. You can check out the Twitter exchange below!
In all honesty, even if the trailer were finished, it would be too soon to release it. The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer also premiered at SDCC and was released online soon after. That film is headed to the big screen in November, which makes complete sense. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 doesn’t open until May 2023, and another Marvel film is coming out ahead of it. I would assume the first trailer could be released around the time Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is released in February 2023. Footage from that film was also shown at SDCC but not released online. It’s more than likely that the public won’t see the trailer for Ant-Man’s latest adventure until near the end of the year.
Do YOU think the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 trailer should’ve been released online at debuting at SDCC, despite James Gunn not thinking it was ready?
