It's been four years since the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but thanks to James Gunn's temporary removal from the project (not to mention COVID-19), the third installment of the franchise has been delayed for quite some time, but that's all set to change. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is already slated to hit theaters in 2023, and James Gunn took to Twitter to confirm that production on the film will finally kick off later this year.
This year.

James Gunn is currently in the midst of production on Peacemaker, a spin-off of The Suicide Squad which focuses on John Cena's character, so he'll have to complete that project before turning his sights on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but Gunn did drop a follow-up tweet to tease the sequel. "Our designers & visual development geniuses are busy creating new, fantastic designs of other worlds & alien beings," Gunn wrote. "I'm not sure the galaxy is big enough for all this magic. This. One. Is. Huge. I'm excited." So am I. Although we have a bit of a wait ahead of us before Vol. 3, we will see the Guardians of the Galaxy a little sooner than that as they're slated to appear in Taika Waititi's Thor: Love & Thunder, which will hit theaters on May 6, 2022. James Gunn's The Suicide Squad will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
